Principal's Corner

August 2017

Dear New Union Family,

I am honored and excited to be the principal at New Union Elementary. Thank you for such a warm welcome!

My husband and I recently purchased my parents’ home in Cannon County, so we are moving from Roswell, Georgia to Woodbury, Tennessee. My mother’s family has lived in Cannon County for generations and I have very fond memories of visiting my grandparents during the summer and on holidays. My parents moved to Cannon County from Atlanta in 1996, so my children spent many summers in Woodbury and our extended family gathers here every year during Thanksgiving week. My husband and I are looking forward to being Tennessee residents - I feel like I’m coming home!

I began my career in education as an elementary teacher in Georgia. I was an elementary assistant principal for 6 years, and then an elementary principal for 7 years. In 2010 I joined the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), a large, nonprofit school improvement organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. In my role with SREB as a school improvement consultant I worked in over 60 schools in grades 3-12 in Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Texas, Alabama, Kentucky, and New Mexico. After seven years of consulting, I was ready to get back to my roots as an elementary administrator and am thrilled to land at New Union and establish roots in my home state, Tennessee.

Although I came onboard after the start of the school year, 2017-18 is off to a great start, thanks to the wonderful New Union Elementary staff and the leadership of assistant principal Gwen Graves. I plan to build on the strengths of our school to continue to improve student achievement and to prepare our students for success in middle grades and high school. Please know that you may contact me at any time via phone or email if you have any concerns or questions. I look forward to meeting each of you, and please know I already love your children!

Very truly yours,

Jill Potts
