Principal's Corner

August 2020

Welcome back NU family. We are all looking forward to seeing you – we missed you!

This year will be different than other years – first, because construction crews will be working all year on our new wing. This changes how students are picked up and dropped off. Check out New Union’s You-tube channel to access the video that demonstrates the new procedures.

Second, because of the corona virus we have to be extra-safe in how we go about our school activities.

1.      Parents and other visitors will not be allowed to come into our school unless they have an appointment. Those allowed into the building will be required to wear masks.

2.      Food brought into the school may not be shared. This means no cupcakes or cookies for birthdays and other special occasions.

3.      We will not be planning any activities that involve large gatherings – this includes assemblies, parties, and PTO events such as back-to-school bash and fall festival.

4.      Teachers have been working to ensure that students are distanced while in their classrooms, the halls, as well as in the gym, library, and music room. Students will be spread out during breakfast and lunch with no more than 10 per table in the cafeteria. We are using part of the gym as additional space for meals and have added 6 tables that seat six students each.

5.      Teachers have worked together to plan bathroom breaks so that no more than one class at a time is in the hall so the students can stand at a distance while in line. In grades that change classrooms, all desks and tables will be disinfected between classrooms and all students will hand sanitize before and after the class.

6.      Students will use their own supplies instead of using community supplies.

7.      We strongly encourage students to bring water bottles so they can use the fill station on each fountain rather than drinking directly from the fountain itself.

8.      Everyone entering the school will have their temperatures checked at the door. Car-riders’ temperatures will be checked at their cars. Bus drivers will check bus-riders’ temperatures as they get on the bus.

9.      All teachers have received supplies of masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant that they will use multiple times a day. Students will use hand sanitizer before handling common items such as chromebooks and manipulatives

We appreciate your support, cooperation and patience as we cope with issues related to the pandemic. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you!

Jill Potts
